vedic astrology

Do you know the meaning of Astrology ? It means the study of relative position and movements of planets, and their impact on human life and the environment. It is based on the concept that there is a continuous transfer of energy between the earth and the other celestial bodies like the sun, stars, etc. These energies significantly affect human life and their surroundings.

Now, let’s try to understand what Vedic Astrology is ? Vedic Astrology has its origin in “Atharva-Veda,” one of the most sacred texts of India. It is popularly known as “Jyotish” in India. It explains the relationship between planetary positions and motions concerning time and their influence on human life and surroundings. According to it, there are 27+1 constellations which are made of twelve zodiac signs, nine planets, and twelve houses. These houses and planets represent different aspects of human life.

As per the Vedic Astrology, the positions of celestial bodies, stars, planets like the sun, the moon, etc. at the time of birth of a newborn determines his characters, inclinations, strength, and weakness. It helps in forecasting the blueprint of a person’s life. The “Janampatri” which is also known as “Kundali” or the “Birth Chart” is the representation of positions of planets in the universe at the time of one’s birth. It precisely indicates the locations of constellations at the time of birth and their impact on the life.

There are three different branches of Vedic Astrology. The branches are called as “Skanda” in Ancient Indian scriptures. The different branches are “Siddhanta or Ganita Skanda,” “Samhita Skanda” and “Hora Skanda.” “Siddhanta or Ganita Skanda” defines astronomy and its applications. “Samhita Skanda” deals with the impact of planets on earth and its surroundings like war, natural hazards like earthquakes, floods, and Vaastu Shastra. The final part “Hora Skanda” deals with predictive astronomy, i.e., related to the interpretation of horoscopes. It is sub-divided into many parts. Some of them are “Parashari,” “Jamini,”  “Tajika,”  “Bhrigu,” etc.

Before we move further, let us see the difference between Vedic Astrology and Western Astrology. The primary difference is Vedic Astrology is based on Sideral System whereas Western is based on Tropical System. In Sidereal System, the signs are defined based on fixed stars. It deals with the position of the earth relative to the sun and planets revolving around the sun as well as the constellation of stars surrounding the earth. The tropical system is based on the position of Vernal Equinox in the Northern Hemispheres.

The Hindu astrology is also known as “Jyotish.” It means the “Science of Light.” The skilled professional of “Jyotish” is called as “Jyotishi.” They study the movement and positions of different planetary motions and explain the meaning of it. In Jyotish, time is considered a significant factor. The correct timing helps in determining the proper position of planets and their impact on humans. The location of planets impacts our Karma and determines our destiny.
